Phosphorus

Critical for ATP synthesis the primary energy currency every muscle cell runs on.

700mg/day adults

Why it matters

Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body after calcium. Around 85% is stored in bones and teeth. The remaining 15% serves a crucial metabolic role as a component of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) the molecule that stores and transfers energy in every cell. Without phosphorus, cells cannot produce or use energy.

For endurance athletes

Phosphorus works alongside calcium for bone health, and adequate intake is important for athletes exposed to high-impact loads. Most athletes consuming adequate total calories will meet their phosphorus needs, but those on restrictive diets or with very high training volumes should be mindful.
