Vitamin B6
Supports protein metabolism, glycogen breakdown and neurotransmitter production.
Why it matters
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is involved in over 100 enzymatic reactions, primarily in amino acid metabolism. It is essential for the breakdown of glycogen (stored glucose) into usable energy, the synthesis of neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine, and the production of haemoglobin. Like other B vitamins it is water-soluble and must be replenished regularly.
For endurance athletes
Athletes with high protein intake and training loads have elevated B6 requirements. Low B6 can impair glycogen breakdown reducing the availability of stored energy during exercise and reduce haemoglobin production. It also supports cognitive function and mood, which matter for motivation and training consistency.
